Modern Israeli Combatitives and instructor development training with Nir Maman

June 23rd, 2010

23303_117482371597853_9967_nAustin, TX- June 19, 2010- I know that there is a lot of confusion within the Israeli Martial Arts community right now. There has been some tension for some time now and a lot of the issues that have been raised by this blog have had major ramifications on instructors in the following systems: Commando Krav Maga (CKM), Haganah, Reality Based Personal Protection and Krav Maga Worldwide.6a0120a872f1e5970b0133eee3c562970b-150wi

It is no secret that CKM has fallen apart and it is run by a scum bag that is sneaking into the US and other countries. He is being used big-time by several people. Much more to come on Moni Aizik, but he has left a ton of decent instructors holding the bag in terms of their ethics. How can you say that you instruct Krav Maga when that CKM garbage isn’t Krav at all. How can you represent CKM in any form after knowing that Moni lied about everything? He has fallen back on the line “I made champions.” Well, that isn’t true either. Joel Gerson is suing Moni, Carlos Newton acknowledges that Moni is a crook and refers to him as the “devil” and Yael Arad only traiend with him when she was very young. He had nothing to do with her Silver medal. Avi Nardia was trained in Israel, right or wrong, and his skills as a martial artist didn’t come from Money… I mean Moni. Their association had to do with money- sorry.6a0120a872f1e5970b01348213d297970c-150wi

Haganah is almost in the same boat. Their advertising is complete bullshit over the years and based on a foundation of lies. Haganah was never taught to the IDF. It was continually updated by Kanarek off the top of his head not “updated by the IDF” as it states in his advertising. In 2004 Mike took a couple of seminars from Nir Maman and had a loose agreement to work with him. Nir is a true professional and has an unreal skill set. The problem is.. when Nir got back from fighting the last war in Israel he discovered that Mike and Randy (Haganah) had stolen most of his concepts and made a martial art system out of it by “mimicking” Nir’s concepts. Nir has DVD’s that predateHaganah by many years (showing POR and other things that Haganah calls it’s own) and he was a section commander and lead Krav Maga instructor at LOTAR in Israel. Anyway, this was bullshit. Upcoming litigation will clear a number of things up in this regard.

Next, Mike brought in Chris Ghannam for tactics and other selfish reasons. Mike lied about training troops on Guantanamo Base and even put this accomplishment on his personal biography for some time. Chris called Mike on his shit and he quit. Mike’s tip student, instructor, 4th degree Haganah black belt and professed best friend, Evangelos Garbis, quit Haganah. There are many good, ethical and decent instructors associated with Haganah- waiting.. hoping.. that this fallout doesn’t take them down too. Haganah FIGHT Centers have lost the ability to get liability insurance in some cases and this whole Kanarek shit-storm hasn’t helped anyone. Waht do all of these decent people who are trying to make a living do?6a0120a872f1e5970b01348213d5b8970c-150wi

Jim Wagner might be the worst of them all. He is a loser and a figment of his own imagination. His “system” is shit. Tactically, it is garbage. His former instructors have come forward by the droves saying so. He invents weird training like “IED identification and location.” He has people search bags for them. Yea. Good tactics. Wagner was himself TERMINATED for possession of a fake bomb that he manufactured while he was a reserve Deputy for Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Great to get training from this loser. He held his big extravaganza recently in Dallas and 4 people attended. He is almost done. Countless people are incorrectly listed as instructors who haven’t subscribed to this methods for years but he won’t take them off of the website. He is now qualified as an unarmed security guard in California. Either way, there were a number of decent people who were ripped off and are potentially teaching a methodology that isn’t good or tactically sound. What do they do?

6a0120a872f1e5970b0120a897fe98970b-350wiWhat now? There is obviously a vacuum happening and people by the thousands have expressed concerns to me. How do you know you aren’t training with a fake or a liar? How does a regular person, martial artist or teacher get exposed to the authentic Israeli Krav Maga taught to 6a0120a872f1e5970b0128779a91aa970c-350wi6a0120a872f1e5970b0120a898015e970b-350witheir Defense Forces or Special Forces? SGT. Robb Hamic teaching reviews- Austin, Albuquerque, etc.- private firearms instruction

June 11th, 2010

Here are some recent reviews for Robb Hamic’s teaching in Austin, Albuquerque and other places in the US.  Instruction was offered to women, men, Law Enforcement and US Military.  Robb offers training privately to individuals or to groups, agencies or units.  His contact information is below.  Call or e-mail to schedule training.

Robb:

Hey there, hope you are doing well. It’s been a while since I’ve talked to you so I thought I would check in with you.

I am currently deployed on active duty at GITMO. It’s not bad at all here, if this place wasn’t a military base it could be a resort! Lots of recreational activities available. I am working with the Joint Task Force in detainee operations and we are preparing for the upcoming commissions. I’m really enjoying it.

I’ve been on active duty since the end of January, I went to my A-School at the FLETC campus in Charleston. My A-School was for “Maritime Law Enforcement Specialist” and we were the first graduating class of this new rating. I had a blast at school! We got to shoot a ton of ammo, qualified on 3 weapons (Sig 229, M-16 and Rem870), wrestled with the Red Man a bunch and did a ton of PT. Plus a lot of law enforcement classroom training and then practical application with boardings. It was a lot of fun for me, definitely a great break from the corporate world. I learned a great deal.

The stuff you taught me paid off big-time – I was one of the only students who qualified on every weapon, basic and combat style on the first try. I won the quick draw competition on the pistol out of 24 students. I received the FLETC “Sharpshooter” award at graduation. Probably where the style you teach helped me most was in the shoot houses and the judgmental pistol course where we are holstered at the start but need to get our guns into action fast when the situation calls for it. I was consistently the first one out of the holster and firing in these scenarios. Thanks again for teaching me, I appreciate all your patience.

Robb,

Your training potentially saved my life, and I wanted to write a review for you, and tell my story.

On March 6th, 2010 my partner and I were attacked by a large crowd in Santa Fe, NM. We had taken a handgun/shotgun deployment course with you a few months prior. You were also my instructor 2 or 3 times prior for handgun/light combative training.

I recently had a mediation session with one of the offenders that the police apprehended. While speaking with him he said a few things that surprised me. He said that even though I was being hit by 8-10 people I wouldn’t stop fighting until I got knocked out, and he was surprised that I was trying to get up the entire time. He couldn’t believe that when I regained consciousness I stood up on my own and walked to the ambulance.

I don’t recall much of it. I know I was swinging, and I know I really wanted to deploy my handgun. Your classes taught me much more than how to fire a weapon, it taught me good judgment. I was fully justified- legally & morally to discharge my weapon but didn’t. I didn’t discharge my weapon because I could not keep my eyes open long enough to verify a target. I feared that I would shoot my partner, a bouncer, or a police officer trying to help me accidentally. I also feared that my weapon would be taken from me if I removed it from its holster.

I think about the people that were involved, drunk, careless, and reckless with no regard for human life, and I’m thankful that I’ve invested time and money into training. They would’ve killed me and not given a damn. You also trained my partner who protected me after I was knocked out.

I truly and adamantly believe that without your training I would have been injured more so than a broken sinus bone, or killed. If you hadn’t trained my partner I’m sure I would’ve been killed as I was still being stomped after I got knocked out (according to witness statements) until he intervened.

My only regret is not taking more training prior to this incident as maybe I would have been able to get up, or maybe would’ve never went down. Although I think we made out OK at 20-2 odds.

This is a photo from the hospital- again with 8-10 people attacking me it should be a lot worse.

Lee Vernon~ I had the pleasure of training with Robb Hamic earlier this week. I have known Robb for awhile and have had the pleasure of training with him in the past. I currently offer training in civilian self defense and soon CCW/CHL licensing. This week I took the CFS class and was very impressed. Being certified as a PDR Instructor through Blauer Tactical System and having read the CFS book, I was eager to put the two together. Robb was very articulate and detailed oriented in his teaching. I have been shooting since I was little, currently hold a CCW license, and have had other combat oriented shooting/pistol classes in the past.

I must say that the CFS skills which Robb taught, really simplified and dramaticly improved my skill set. The CFS methods taught demonstrated efficiency and effective skills that greatly improve your chances if you ever have to use your weapon. It was great to integrate the PDR/SPEAR fundamentals with the CFS methods. The speed and precision exercises brought to light a whole new way of thinking when it comes to potential threats and tactics. The simpicity of using the bodies natural biomechanics and physiology to danger is the key to the simplicity of the system. You are using the bodies natural response and doing what comes naturally to all of us, instead of complicated moves or systems that teach otherwise. That ensures speed, precision, and accuracy. All of which is critical in a potential deadly encounter. Robb did an excellent job of teaching the CFS methods and answering any and all questions.

I enjoy Robb’s teaching methods and look forward to the opportunity to take some I.C.E. classes in the future. (Hope you make it to Austin, TX in the near future Mr. Pincus) This training has made me want to pursue getting my CFS instructor cert. in the near future. I am always looking for better, reality based training with an emphasis on entegrity. I.C.E., the CFS methods, and Robb meet those requirements. I highly recommend I.C.E. (Rob Pincus) and Robb Hamic of Summit Self Defense for both!

Recent reviews for Robb Hamic, self-defense and firearms teacher
Susan Rogers- I read “Combat Focus Shooting” about three months ago. Great book. I am looking forward to reading the new edition. Thank you, Rob, for your dedication and the years you have spent developing such an incredible gun deployment model. My first encounter with CFS was several months ago when I met Robb Hamic. I had stumbled across his website and read words and phrases like “weapons deployment training” and “I teach people how to win violent stressful encounters with a handgun. It is as simple as that.” Well.. that surely captured my interest! I had to find out more. I phoned Robb and scheduled a 5-hour private shooting session. I had absolutely no idea what I was in for! Wow! After that first session, I left the range with confidence knowing that altho I needed more training, I was off to a good start. I was hooked.. totally addicted.

I have continued training with Robb in guns and CQ tactics since then. He has been an excellent instructor from day-one.Robb participated in the April CFSID course, and earned his certification as a CFS instructor. I enjoyed a day at the range with him a few days after he came home from the course. Altho he had already introduced me to CFS concepts, his teaching model is now tweaked. While not radically changed, it has however, reached a whole new level. On this day he reviewed the CFS concepts more comprehensively.. a few more light-bulb moments for me. I also noticed that he was not wearing his gun and holster, a departure from the norm. Never was an issue with me, but perhaps to some. Even when he does wear it, he seldom uses it. No ego demos. Demos should be adjuncts to good verbal-based instruction, not stand-alones.

Not every student learns the same way. Auditory, visual, kinesthetic, and combinations. A good teacher picks up on the individual student’s style. At times a demo is helpful. However, it should not become a performance.Robb presents all his lessons – guns and h2h – in a relaxed, clear, organized manner.. with lots of laughter in the mix. We really do have fun. I usually have my questions answered before I get around to ask them. Of course, training with him is like the proverbial ‘drinking from a fire hydrant.’ More questions come to mind hours and days later. He is always gracious to answer them via email.. another mark of a caring instructor. I am very grateful for that. That takes extra time from his day. I can honestly say that he is a superb teacher and my #1 inspiration. It is an honor to be associated with him. (Todah rabah, Robb. I know you will be reading this.)A few evenings ago, I overheard an instructor tell a group, “You don’t need to know the details. Just do it.” Huh?.. That is not teaching.

I have been a teacher for years. First and foremost, foundational understanding of the basic concepts in most any subject matter must be solid in the students’ minds if they are going to advance. CFS is no exception. Understanding of ‘why’ and ‘how’ as they pertain to survival in a dynamic critical incident is essential. CFS is all about that. That is part of what makes it so good. The CFS model is solid. Based upon the natural innate responses of the mind/body via intuition and the ANS to stimuli and stress, it is one that is most likely to be effective in successfully recognizing and responding to a threat. An appropriate partner system to CFS is PDR -Personal Defense Readiness developed by Tony Blauer. A CQC system, PDR is similarly based upon the natural neurophysiological responses to threats.Thank you Rob and Robb. Rob, I hope to see you at a CFSID course in the not too distant future. Robb, I will see you on Friday. :)

Robb Hamic– I run training constantly in Austin, Albuquerque and other places where I am called. My students usually send me e-mails for course critique. I will post some recent classes and the comments. I trained a mixed group of police, SWAT, military and a few civilians in CFS concepts on April 3- before I became a certified CFS instructor at a really nice active shooter school. Here are some comments:

~Thanks again for the epic Handgun course at XXXXXX. I really learned a great deal and appreciate being exposed to your handgun mastery. (It was really amazing and a lot of fun.)
~ I never thought I could shoot so quickly without using my sights.
~ I cant believe that I was doing this all along but never knew it.
~ This tactic will help me and my guys are we serve high risk warrants daily.
~ We serve on average one per day and we operate in teams. Lots of short distances, hallways and fast situations. This gave me a new confidence.
~ It is nice to be on the cutting edge for once. I am deploying soon but haven’t had much training on my M9. No decent fast shooting with a solid method. The training I get in my unit is unrealistic for where I am going and especially for using my handgun. You training could save lives.
~I will say that far and away yours was the best shooting seminar Ive ever attended, the immersion and repetition is great fun and works very quickly, thank you.
~ As always, your training is high speed and right on the mark. You have trained us many times in a number of different tactics. I like this the best of all of them and I like that it can work for all of my men
~ I want to get you into the academy to teach new cadets. The CFS method would be faster to train and easier to teach. It would save money and maybe lives.
~ I learned a lot and I will be happy to have you back again soon at the school. I want to demo this on lots of agencies that come through here. It will be a hit.

I also run private and semi-private classes weekly. Here are some since my recent comments:

Just a quick note to tell you how much I enjoyed my training. Here is a quote you can use as a reference if you want. I was not really sure what to expect when I scheduled the training. I thought I had a pretty good handle on shooting from my experience in the service. Was I wrong! The instinctive shooting you taught is totally different approach than what I was trained in. But it is totally what I needed to feel comfortable in a self-defense situation. I thoroughly enjoyed that discussion we had on when to draw our weapon and when not to. It was 4 hours extremely well spent! I look forward to my next session.

Bob Eskridge

~ I really got a lot out of my private lesson yesterday. I never thought I could go from 0 experience to being a competent and fast shooter. Combat Focus Shooting is amazing. It seemed like you gave so much information that I didn’t understand then but I performed, do my dismay. I am remembering your lecture now and it is starting to make a lot of sense. I really appreciate you stressing my own future development and practice recommendations. I am joining the range today. You are an awesome teacher and all I can say is thank you.

~ As a single woman I never owned or fired a gun. I am so glad that I found you and I can say that your CFS course was not what I expected at all. I have had self defense instruction before and all of my instructors were big jerks. They like to act like tough guys and they can’t teach. What a surprise to meet you and see your style. You obviously know your stuff and I would never want to be on the other end of a fight with you but you didn’t have to act like a person that was trying to impress me. You impressed me with your knowledge and especially the delivery. I have so much confidence now. I can’t wait until next month and I see this as a path that I will be following for a long time to come. I am telling all of my friends and expect calls! I only wish I had met you sooner.

I own a medium size security guard/ investigation company in Albuquerque. I had the opportunity to teach a group of my supervisors who carry on duty and need Combat Focus Shooting skills last week. I had already given them instruction on my prior knowledge of CFS but in the meantime I had refined my skills.

~ This class was amazing boss. I like this way of shooting so much better than anything I have ever learned. It is so fast, efficient, as you said. Less Time, Effort, Energy keeps running though my head.. – Kenny Hougas
~ CFS is the best and I am honored to be exposed to this way of thinking and using a gun in an incident. I feel like I got the most updated material before some people who really should be seeing it first. A few of our guards have been involved in shootings and I think that this is a solid system that will help them to prevail if there ever comes a time again. Thanks.- Chris Perine
~ Wow is all I can say. You are always bringing so much training to us that is out of this world but Combat Focus Shooting takes the cake. Wow. I can’t wait until next month.- Alan Saint
~ I wish was trained on this when I first started shooting. The class was great and I know some guys who are going to be pissed that they missed the class. That won’t happen again. You are a great instructor and thank you for teaching us and caring about us.- Danny Orozoco

Many more to come..

This is a review from one of my private students that I trained last week. Great guy. Investigative Journalist that has an elevated threat level and had some previous experience with guns and a CCW permit but no real deployment training. I was proud of his work.

I’ve had my concealed carry weapons permit for two years, but it only took one class of private instruction with Robb Hamic to improve my shooting skills and boost my gun handling confidence. Robb helped me define my mission statement — to defend my self, family, friends and home. Once I understood the importance of pre-determining my decision to use the weapon without hesitation if threatened, the mechanical and physical training was a breeze. Robb’s delivery of Combat Focus Shooting, intuitive shooting style proved effectively immediately. While other people at the range settled in for target play, Robb shared his CFS shooting style with me. Wow, when we pulled back my target sheet I instantly saw that all 250 rounds fired were kill shots, and my shot grouping had never been tighter. I left the range knowing that my speed and precision had improved dramatically. The next time I drove to the range I quietly hummed Robb’s shooting mantra: Look, extend, touch, press, scan.

Peter St. Cyr
New Mexico

Alle Crouch– Thanks Robb for teaching me how to hurt all the bad guys! I really appreciate it. And yes, I am sore today but I am loving every bit of it.

Gene Smithson– I will say that far and away yours was the best shooting seminar Ive ever attended, the immersion and repetition is great fun and works very quickly, thank you.

Israeli Combat Shooting™ logo Israeli Combat Shooting (ICS) has a familiar foundation of muscle memory, instinct and reliability that is easy to teach to everyone. ICS saves time and allows the shooter to not even look at gun sights. In fact, over half of all shootings happen in a shot distance. No sights are required when you can almost touch the attacker. ICS is a programmed method of weapons deployment that has been very successful in Israel for the last few decades. It is designed for close-quarter action and teaches the shooter to “draw, cock and shoot” a violent offender in one second or less. “I teach people how to win violent stressful encounters with a handgun. It is as simple as that.” says Robb Hamic.

IMG_7285 Professor Ernest Estrada is a certified 1st degree blackbelt in  Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  He also has extensive training in other various fighting arts such as Muay Thai, Escrima, Kali, Shoot Wrestling and Boxing. He has over 15 years of law enforcement experience and is a former Deputy Sheriff. Combat Focus Shooting™ in Vancouver Washington

June 1st, 2010

Do you want to take a class that makes you more efficient in the context a dynamic critical incident, instead of just learning isolated shooting skills. Hoping that you can defend yourself and or someone you care about. Hope isn’t a method, but Combat Focus Shooting™ and it’s counter ambush methodology is.  We are holding a class in Vancouver Washington.

Empirical evidence shows the body is going to do certain things when you’re faced with threatening situations. Combat Focus Shooting is a intuitive shooting program designed to help the shooter be more efficient in the context of a dynamic critical incident.

Things that are Intuitive work well with what the body does naturally. We can also extend that concept to say that things which are Intuitive in the context of Combat Focus Shooting™ works well with the way our guns operate and the conditions in which we are most likely to need defensive shooting skills.

This course will be taught by Rob Pincus the founder of Combat Focus Shooting™.

Course Description
This 3 day program combines the curriculum of the Combat Focus Shooting™ Course
with much of the 2 day Advanced Pistol Handling Program into one 1600+ round
course.

In addition to exploring the principles and fundamentals of the Combat Focus
Program and numerous drills to help students develop a better understanding of the
Balance between Speed & Precision, this course will cover the techniques of 360

I made a women cry in my self-defense class yesterday..

May 25th, 2010

Women's self defense by Robb Hamic

Women's self defense by Robb Hamic

I made a woman cry during self-defense work yesterday. As a man who cares for women,   my initial reaction was to make it better and give her a hug but I know better.  I am a professional teacher and I work with at least a thousand women per year.  I give women opportunities to learn how to protect themselves, their kids and families.  More than anything, I think that I teach women that it is OK to have peace of mind.  After all, heart disease and stress kill people more than bad guys.

I admire women and I understand them.  I choose to spend my time developing skills that allow them to fight better with their hands, guns and in realistic scenarios.  My teaching mentor, Rob Pincus, stresses that all people learn better when they are comfortable.  We all need to be physically comfortable with the movements and intellectually comfortable with the concepts behind the material that is taught.  I think that women need to be comfortable with their teacher.

I like to say that women have perfect intuition.  It is suppressed by thoughts of “craziness” or written off as just “being paranoid” but you are usually right and you know it.  This is your primal survival response making you feel before you think.  Cognitive functions are much slower than intuition, if cognition is even possible.  The ability to recognize a threat early is a much better skill than knowing how to fight or shoot a gun.  Awareness helps but for women intuition is key.  Listen to yourself and give your ancestors credit.  If they didn’t take natural survival actions you wouldn’t be here to read this article.

Most men instructors don’t talk about emotion when it comes to defending yourself but it is important.  All of your self-defense strategies must fit into your own set of morals, values and ethics.  You have to give yourself pre-permission to use self defense and this can be activated with a personal mission statement.  Here is mine:

“I walk around with a smile and I try to be happy but if someone crosses my path that wants to do me, my family or a person that I choose to protect harm; I will do whatever is necessary to keep us safe, based on my perception of danger.  Up to and including taking another person(s) life.  If it is the only option, I will exchange my life for my wife or children’s life.  If I have to fight, I will use every once of aggression, decisiveness and intelligence in my body to overwhelm my attacker(s). ” – Robb Hamic

This statement makes things simple for me.  It can make using self defense strategies easier for you too. Most women will gladly agree that they would sacrifice themselves for their kids but what would happen if you were killed?  Who would take care of your little ones?  Don’t forget that bad guys have a job just like you do and we cross paths with them daily.  Three percent of our society are sociopaths who have no empathy for other living things.   Six people out of one thousand are victims of a violent assault in the United States per year.  An alarming amount of women will be the victim of some sort of violence and many are raped.

What if I could show you some simple things to address your fears and protect yourself? That is the very question that I asked my client yesterday.  Her fear was being pushed down.  I showed her a very efficient and fast tactic to deal with being physically pushed.  This was not an offensive move.  We tried it a few times and in a minute I was giving her a 100% guy push with total bad guy energy.  She stepped back, having braced herself, and wept.  It was a release.  She had obviously had some injury around this type of aggression.  She continued to look to me as if she was ready for more but her eyes were soft.  I asked her if anyone would ever push her down again and she said “no!”   I am confident in this fact.  Next she was blocking full contact haymaker punches from me with little effort.  Success.

We shared in the success and I can’t claim credit for giving her some secret ninja move that gave her a super power.  She had it in her all of the time and just needed a little refinement to her instinct.  I gave her an opportunity to learn.  I am profoundly grateful for the experience and her work.  Women have the potential to tap into their fears because they are more readily honest with themselves about their abilities.  My clients learn how to tap into their aggression to fight back.  I give tools to them that allow them to reach their goals with less time energy and effort.  It sounds simple because it is.  I travel around the world to learn and bring it to my students like a delivery person.  I am addicted to learning and teaching.

I made three women cry last week but now you can understand how I see this as success.

May 25th, 2010

Austin, TX- March 25, 2010- Combat Focus Shooting™ (CFS) is now being offered for the first time in Austin and Central Texas by certified teacher, Robb Hamic. Rob Pincus, who hosts two television shows, created CFS. America’s Best Defense and SWAT TV on the Outdoor Channel™. Rob has credentialed Robb Hamic to teach the CFS program who successfully completed the Instructor Development Course hosted in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Robb Hamic resides in Austin and specializes in training people privately or semi-privately for in Combat Focus Shooting™ http://www.combatfocusshooting.com. Robb combines CFS with Texas state CHL requirements for a new concealed license or a renewal. Robb Hamic http://www.robbhamic.com is a professional self-defense trainer who provides training to law enforcement, military, executive protection and people across the world. Robb travels monthly but provides private training and certification while he is in Austin Texas or in Albuquerque New Mexico. He specializes in training women in efficient self-defense and shooting methods.

Combat Focus Shooting™ is an intuitive shooting program designed to make the student more efficient in the context of a dynamic critical incident. Intuitive motions work well with what the body does naturally using less tme energy and effort to accomplish your goals. A dynamic critical incident is sudden, chaotic, threatening and people should be training for this potential fight. Most gun training is static and places little emphasis on reality exposure to scenarios that will enhance your ability to survive.

Self-Defense concepts vs. simple techniques

May 6th, 2010

Many self-defense systems or styles stress high repetition techniques.  I think that this is a potentially dangerous way to teach self defense.  Don’t forget that most fights happen out of an ambush and self-defense is almost certainly used in counter-ambush situations.  It doesn’t matter if you are unarmed or have a gun to use in the situation.  Many of these “systems” pre-supposes that you recognize the threat.

Most of my readers have had self-defense, martial art or shooting lessons.  Think of the examples that you have been given: “OK, the attacker grabs you by the throat and starts to strangle you.. or  The target presents a lethal threat in front of you and you draw your gun in response to this threat..”  These are two, very common examples given to women, men, law enforcement or in urban military training involving civilians.  Does it really make sense or do we, as students, just listen to the instructor?  Do we question the validity of the training or scenarios that are given to us?  If not, why?

Rob Pincus, Founder of ICE Training and Combat Focus Shooting™, has reinforced my natural reaction to question the lessons that are given to me.  ”Challenge the material,” is something that I have heard him say that makes a lot of sense to me.  ICE training As an instructor, I encourage my students to ask why.  Intellectually and conceptually I want them to know because they bet their lives on me and my material as a self-defense instructor.  This is a serious responsibility and I take it as such.

Tony Blauer, CEO of Blauer Tactical Systems and one of my mentors, once told me that a system or technique won’t save your life.  A tactic will and I also believe that a concept has the same effect to keep us safe.  We can’t pick our fight and don’t know when it will happen.  The bad guy chooses the time and place.  We choose when and how to end the fight in the best circumstances.

D3R_5631 Combat Focus Shooting™ teaches us that it is far better to recognize a threat early than the athletic ability to shoot fast and strait.  Dynamic critical incidents are chaotic sudden and threatening.  The only thing that you can plan for is your body’s natural reactions and incorporate ways for you to respond to the threat in an efficient way, taking less time effort and energy to stop the deadly attack.  Recognition is key in training and in real life.  How do you recognize?  One effective way to recognize attacks is to train in a realistic environment as frequently as possible.  Another good idea is to just pick your head up and look around you.  Trust your gut (instincts) and don’t place yourself into bad situations if possible.  If a situation starts to go bad use your intelligence to find solutions.  Enter- the concept.

If you train for technique then the street never looks like the dojo or shooting range.  The attackers are usually a target or fellow student that doesn’t try very hard to be a bad guy.  Real bad guys want to injure you emotionally, hurt you physically and maybe worse.  If you train with static targets at the range or stand in place and take sighted shots overtime under no stress you aren’t doing yourself any service or increasing your abilities.  It would be better to consider this time “play time” or “stress relief” rather than training.  If you give yourself unrealistic expectations about bad guy behavior or how you will prevail in violent encounters because your instructor said so, think again.  Don’t fall for it.

Find a trainer who takes his training seriously and brings the most relevant and up-to-date training to you as a student.  Find an instructor that looks like a professional instructor and can teach not show.  Any instructor can make his own demonstration look good but does that really matter to you as a student?  We all have different capabilities and we need to find defenses that are intuitive and work well with what the body does naturally.

If you are looking for a good self defense model for gun deployment consider Combat Focus Shooting™.  It is widely regarded in the self-defense, military and law enforcement industry.  It is intended for new shooters or professional operators and there are many levels of training.

If you are looking for a good model for hand to hand self-defense then consider Summit Self Defense™ for your protection needs.  Summit has trained thousands and specialize in unique and efficient methods to end violent encounters.  Summit provides training by seminar or private sessions locally, nationally or internationally to women, law enforcement, military or men.

Combat Focus Shooting Instructor Development.. Always a student..

April 28th, 2010

rob hamic at combat focus shooting instructor development I spent four days in Virginia Beach attending an instructor development course taught by Rob Pincus, founder of I.C.E Training Company and the Combat Focus Shooting (CFS) program.  My expectation was to improve my skills as a firearms instructor and to better learn Rob’s method, which is gaining popularity in the civilian, military and law enforcement sectors.

I heard that the course was difficult and that many of therobb hamic at cfs course test instructor candidates failed to achieve completion of the subjective teaching test and the written exam.  I met Rob a year before at Blauer Tactical’s Summer Camp, hosted by self-defense expert Tony Blauer.  I immediately identified with his theories about effectiveness in gun deployment and I read his book Combat Focus Shooting and watched his DVDs.  I knew that something had happened after I read the book the first time as I started sharing the concepts with my firearms students the next day on the range.  I observed them learning faster.  That was a clue.

robb hamic at dinner with rob pincus and friends I contacted Rob for some clarifications and critiques via e-mail (half expecting no response from him).  He produces several TV shows and travels across the world teaching people CFS.  He not only responded, we started an exchange.  I had to remind myself that we are in the “pay me now” age and I was talking with one of the industry’s leading experts and he never asked anything of me except clarity and integrity in my teaching his concepts to my students.  I was not a CFS certified instructor, just a gun instructor that wanted more options for my students.  He knew that and helped me anyway with no real expectation that he would ever see a profit from me.  That speaks to his integrity and professionalism.

I signed up for the Combat Focus Shooting instructor development class and traveled to Virginia at an expense.  I have high expectations for instructor development classes but they are rarely met.  I have been a semi-professional student of self defense for the last seven years, attending, I don’t know how many schools.  I think many of the instructors from the various schools have read the same book on how to conduct class and training.  Powerpoint presentations, lots of end-user type of performance, lots of breaks and long lunches.  Early dismissal on the last day of class is a staple of most of the instructor development (ID) schools that I have attended as a cop or privately.  Rob broke the paradigm.  Plain and simple.

There was one part day spent at the range to experience the material as an end-user, with instructor level critiques included and the rest of the training was in the classroom focusing on REAL INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT.  Real is defined as 15ish hour days with more lecture and material than I have ever seen in one course.  Discussion, hard questions and study.  After dinner the time was usually around 11 PM.  It was study time until around 1:30 AM each night.  No time for hanging out and relaxing, which is common-place for most ID classes.  Class would start again early in the morning.

It was apparent that Rob had created something entirely different as I looked around me at the other students.  I would describe the group as diverse and successful instructors, some were high level operators.  No slackers or people that obviously didn’t fit in, which is usually the case with most ID classes.  The curriculum was highly researched and intuitive, just like CFS.  Rob really placed a high standard on the instructor knowing the cause behind the effect and he was not satisfied with a word that you said versus with it really meant.  Example:

Tunnel Vision: This is a term that I have been taught and said many times without knowing its true meaning or survival positive on the end user.

Correct terminologyIn the context of a dynamic critical incident, there are several internal factorsrobb hamic professional firearms teacher that happen to you such as a rise in visual acuity towards the center of your field of vision. (this might be what some people refer to as Tunnel Vision but can’t really explain).

I am proud to have taken this course and I will continue my training with Rob.  I will continue my research and application of my skills to teach students how to be more effective in dynamic critical incidents by using intuitive actions that take less time, effort and energy.  There is value in these concepts and I know my students want to be exposed to this learning.

Rob set the bar pretty high as a teacher and for my future expectations for Instructor Development schools.  My evolution continues.

Israeli Krav Maga Association is the SOURCE of Krav Maga

April 6th, 2010

Krav Maga Founder Imi Lichtenfeld’s Original and Longest Standing Organization —  CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFO

Israeli Krav Maga Association (IKMA) lead by Grandmaster Haim Gidon

Krav maga founder Imi Lichtenfeld established the non-profit Israeli Krav Maga Association (IKMA) on October 22, 1978 to promote krav maga throughout the world.  All other splinter krav maga organizations received their training from the IKMA.  Each instructor leading these other organizations received his training and instructor certifications from the IKMA.

For krav maga students and enthusiasts who wish to train, the obvious question is with whom to train.  In deciding which organization to choose, ask oneself, “would I prefer a diploma from the founder of Israeli krav maga’s association, the IKMA, or a diploma from someone who received his instructor training and diploma from the IKMA, but, who is now printing his own diplomas?”

Grandmaster Haim Gidon, 10th dan, with Imi’s explicit (on the mat) approval added many modifications and improvements to the krav maga system including weapons and street oriented groundwork, and, especially retzev (“continuous combat motion”).  These advancements were not available to anyone outside of the non-profit IKMA organization which remained a small dedicated group of individuals.  Israeli krav maga from the IKMA continues to improve and evolve, true to krav maga’s modern combat evolution.
